Game of the week: Blob Opera

Here is a link to a wonderful new project that allows students to experiement with vocal colours and ranges.

Opera Blobs

Soprano                                                                      Alto                                                      Tenor                                                         Bass

How it works

The four main vocal ranges are:

Soprano – A high female (or boy’s) voice

Alto – A low female (or boy’s) voice

Tenor – A high (adult) male voice

Bass – A low (adult) male voice

Melody

Start by picking the right most purple “bass” opera blob. Move your curser up for higher notes in the bass range or down for lower notes for the bass blob.

Next put your curser over the tenor “green opera blob” and do the same. The melody is now in the tenor and the bass will sing matching harmony.

With your curser on the blue blob, the alto leads the trio of singing blobs. Moving to the orange soprano blob creates a quartet of singers with the melody in the soprano voice.

Vowel shapes

Notice the shapes that the Opera Blobs make with their mouths when they sing the vowel sounds. Change the shape by moving your curser to the right for a more closed sound “oooh” , and to the left to make an open vowel sound “ah”.

Change the shape = change the sound!

Now you are ready to take your choir on tour to London or New York City! You can also record the quartet singing the masterpieces of sound that you create!
